Extraordinary Nurse Recognized at St. John’s Mercy Hospital
St. John’s Mercy Hospital nurse Carol Maune received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses from the American Organization of Nurse Executives and the DAISY Foundation.
Patients nominated Maune for the award.
“Patients sent in nomination forms for the care that Carol delivered after they returned home from the hospital. This was an extra step for the patients to write about the care that Carol delivered. The patients were very impressed with Carol’s abilities and compassion as a nurse.” said Jeanette Holtmeyer, RN, BSN, special projects coordinator. “The patients wrote about how Carol was attentive to the needs of patients and their families, her positive attitude, clinical knowledge and professionalism.”
Maune, who has been a nurse at St. John’s Mercy Hospital since 1974, was proud to receive the award.
“Receiving this award was the most awesome experience and what a privilege,” Maune said. “I have always loved being a nurse and this was such an honor to be nominated by patients for the care given to them. The experience was so meaningful it brought tears to my eyes. I am so honored.”
Maune received a DAISY Award pin and a certificate that reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” She also received a hand carved sculpture entitled “A Healer’s Touch.” It was sculpted by a member of the Shona Tribe of Zimbabwe and symbolizes the bond of care and trust between a patient and healer.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Barnes died in 1999 from an autoimmune disease. The care he and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired them to find a way to recognize nurses for the difference they make in the lives of patients and their families. The award is given to nurses who have been nominated by patients, families, peers, physicians and administrators.
