Driver's Assessment and Training Program

Occupational Therapists evaluate skills and abilities necessary to safely and independently drive a motor vehicle. This program is designed for, but not limited to, individuals with dysfunction due to:

  • traumatic brain injury
  • stroke
  • physical disabilities
  • dementia
  • other neurologic disorders

The evaluation includes assessment of:

  • physical capabilities
  • cognitive and perceptual-motor abilities
  • reaction time
  • visual acuity (including night vision)
  • decision making skills
  • behind the wheel assessment of driving skills and operation of a motor vehicle under the supervision of the evaluator in a dual-controlled car.

Following completion of the evaluation, recommendations will be made to the physician regarding:

  • driving ability and safety
  • need for adaptive equipment
  • need for further behind the wheel training sessions.

*Note: Physician referral is required to participate in this program.
