Preparing for Your
Baby's Homecoming |
|
Finally,
you hear the words, "Your baby is going home." And even though you
may have been waiting weeks or even months for this day, you may feel yourself
rushing to finish those last-minute details. It is not unusual to experience
mixed feelings at this time. Give yourself some time to feel comfortable with
your baby and his or her care.
Although your baby still
has medical needs that require continued care, the recovery process has progressed
to the point that we can begin the gradual transition of care to you, the parents.
We will work with you to increase your ease and confidence in caring for your
baby. This care may range from routine tasks, such as feeding and bathing, to,
in certain instances, giving medications, home monitoring or learning CPR.
To help you assume the care
of your baby, we offer classes as well as instructions tailored to the specific
needs of your baby. In addition, a number of video tapes and books are available.
If you are interested in these materials or if you have questions, ask your
baby's nurse or the family support coordinator.
Rooming-in
Many parents find it helpful
to room-in with their babies before discharge. This arrangement enables one
or both parents to spend either a day or night at the Medical Center, during
which time you care for your baby on your own. Rooming-in is provided at no
charge. Your baby's nurse will check on you every three to four hours to make
sure you don't have any questions; otherwise, you will have all the privacy
that you desire. And, professional help will be only a few steps away at all
times.
We are excited about your
baby's progress and we look forward to working with you as you prepare for your
baby's next milestone - going home!
