Sharing Your Feelings

The hospitalization of your baby is likely a very stressful time for you and your family. Feelings of worry, fear, sadness, uncertainty, guilt, anger and helplessness are natural. This has not been the birth experience you anticipated and you have had to cope with many unexpected problems.

It sometimes helps to acknowledge and share your feelings with family, friends, your doctor and other professionals. We encourage you to seek out and use the support and resources offered at St. John's Mercy Medical Center.

In addition to the chaplain and family support coordinator, the care coordinators are available to help you deal with the emotional and financial strains on you and your family. If necessary, they will assist you in preparing for discharge and inform you about various community resources.

Many parents find that one of the best support systems is provided by other parents who have experienced similar situations. We invite and encourage you to attend the NICU Parent Group meetings.

The NICU Parent Group meetings provide an opportunity to meet with other parents and share their "ups" and "downs." The meetings also provide helpful information about topics related to premature babies or newborn illness. Meeting times and topics are posted outside the NICU North and NICU South.

Another source of support comes from our graduate parents, the NICUPs. These parents are volunteers who have had a baby in the NICU at St. John's Mercy. They understand and want to help make your experience a little easier. If you would like to speak with a Graduate Parent, call 314-251-6636, or fill out a Parent Information Card and return it to the family support coordinator or NICU secretary. Pastoral Services staff members are also available to provide support to you during this time.

Financial concerns may also be on your mind at this time. Newborn intensive care costs may tax even the most comprehensive insurance coverage and are certain to burden the personal resources of any family. You will want to contact your insurance company and your St. John's Mercy account representative (314-251-6900). Our
care coordinators are also available for information and consultation about financial issues (314-251-6094).
