Helping a Young Adult Seek Treatment

An 18-year-old is considered an adult and you cannot force him or her to seek help if he or she refuses.

However, if he or she is of harm to himself or herself with severe destructive choices or threatens harm to others, you can take him or her to the St. John’s Mercy Emergency Department or call Behavioral Health Intake for immediate assessment at 314-251-6565.

If an adult meets the above criteria, there are procedures in place to temporarily hold an adult over 18 until one is sure they are safe. Counsleing may be the first step to getting further help if needed.
